Development
- Why would I want my child to learn to undo a buckle? Buckling and unbuckling is a multi-stage developmental task. Children become fascinated with buckles around 15 -18 months when they begin to be aware of all of the buckles in their environment. Your child will begin to manipulate buckles at this age, eventually mastering the buckling task. Children do not develop the ability to unbuckle buckles until after 3 years. Unbuckling not only requires additional coordination and skill but strength as well. Mastering unbuckling comes at a stage where simple buckles are no longer used in safety restraints for toddlers. BuckleyBoo dolls give toddlers a fun and safe place to develop this essential developmental skill. Additionally, the buckles used for BuckleyBoo in no way resemble or conform to the configurations and complexity of buckles used for safety purposes for children this age.
- How is this a developmental toy? Development is based on mastery. Your child is continually trying to master their environment which in many ways requires small motor coordination and scanning visual cues.
- My child can buckle but not unbuckle. Is this normal? Yes, babies and toddlers will begin to develop the skills to buckle at approximately 18 months. Additionally at the age of 15-18 months they will begin recognizing that the ribbon patterns match and will help them identify the correct buckle. At approximately 3 years, they will begin to attempt to unbuckle the buckle and a new developmental task is on its way to mastery.
